To carry out a newt survey to ensure their protection – and finding no more than 7 or 8 and very limited evidence of breeding – and less than 12 months later, seeing with the naked eye, more than a hundred in the same location, is especially rewarding. In much the same way, Jim, our Master Hedgelayer, will see the insects following him along a run of hedgerow, followed quite swiftly by the birds looking for a tasty and now accessible snack!
